A Menomonee Falls Residence

Johnson's Nursery creates a "Natural" glacial driftless atmosphere.
Even though Registered Landscape Architect, Rick Naleid has seen this style of home several times before, none were as interesting as this “Gem”. This lot was a perfect fit for this contemporary home. Built on a rectangular lot measuring only 120’ x 100’ the homeowners had definite design features in mind. With only 15’ to each side of the lot lines, privacy from the neighbors became an issue. Rick also had to contend with the backyard, in which the elevation was 7’ lower than the front yard, a perfect fit for the exposed basement.

Garden Center landscape architects use native plants of Wisconsin to add year round color.
General requirements included: a natural, but simple, unsculptured appearance with as much low maintenance as possible, colorful complimentary blooms of purples and yellows all summer long with the use of mostly perennials, room for some annuals, and ornamental grasses for fall and winter interest.

Our landscape architects give you what you want.
With these requirements in mind, Rick set out to create a “Natural” Wisconsin driftless glacial atmosphere. Topsoil was brought in to create rolling berms and native weather-edge outcropping stones were incorporated. Weather-edge Lannon stone slabs in varying sizes were used as a staircase to get from the front yard to the rear yard. Once all the hardscape was built into the undulating landscape, the next challenge was plant selection.

Limber pines, groundcover, and ornamental grasses were used to create a look of an unsculpted Wisconsin native prairie.
With limited available planting spaces and Rick keeping in mind one of the homeowners requirements was privacy from the neighbors, Rick opted to use unusual conifers. Limber pines were used to create focal points and screening, while large drifts of groundcover created an unsculptured look and provided winter color in the landscape. Masses of ornamental grasses swaying in the wind gave the homeowners a feeling of native prairies that existed several centuries ago.

With limited space, a great looking yard is possible.
The turf area only accounts for 50% of the entire lot. The reasons for this were: to reduce mowing time, to give way to the large planting beds and to meet the homeowner’s request to keep the landscape as low maintenance as possible. These reasons set this contemporary home into a stylized prairie-like setting.

No matter what time of year, this landscape is always interesting to view and is constantly changing from season to season.
